Central government pensioners aged 80 and above receive an additional 20 per cent on the pension amount each month. The Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare (DoPPW) has guidelines for determining the compassionate allowance based on age and the pension disbursal process. In an October 18, 2024, notification the department has further clarified the process.
The circular states, “As per the provisions of Sub Rule 6 of Rule 44 of CCS (Pension) Rules 2021, after completion of 80 years of age or above by a retired government servant, in addition to a pension, a compassionate allowance (is) admissible under the rules; additional pension or additional compassionate allowance shall be payable to the retired government servant.”

According to the circular, central civil pensioners aged 80 but less than 85 will receive an additional 20 per cent. Those aged 85 but less than 90, will receive an additional 30 per cent, and those 90 but less than 95, will get an additional 40 per cent on the pension amount.

The pension amount increases by 10 to 50 per cent for those aged 95 and less than 100. Those aged 100 and above will get an additional 100 per cent on their original pension amount.

85 to less than 90: 30 per cent additional pension/compassionate allowance
90 to less than 95: 40 per cent additional pension/compassionate allowance
95 to less than 100: 50 per cent additional pension/compassionate allowance
100 and above: 100 per cent additional pension/compassionate allowance

The additional pension will be calculated from the first day of the month a pensioner becomes eligible. For instance, if a pensioner’s birth date is July 25, the pension will be payable from the first day of that month, which means July 1.
The notification clarifies, “For example, a pensioner born on August 20, 1942, shall be eligible for additional pension at 10 per cent of the basic pension from August 1, 2022. A pensioner born on August 1, 1942, shall also be eligible for additional pension at 20 per cent of the basic pension from August 1 2022.” The age-linked additional pension will give super senior pensioners a financial cushion as their age advances.
