When you think of a person who is 80 years old, the image of a frail individual retired from active work comes to mind. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan, 81, may have demolished that perception, challenging people regarding their views about the “ideal age” for retirement. His enthusiasm towards work has sent a positive message to society that age is just a mental construct for retirement rather than a physical decline. With many blockbuster movies and successful television programmes to his credit, his fans have never stopped admiring him.
In a recent blog post, the veteran actor sought to put into perspective some public comments about him regarding continuing to work despite his advanced age. Bachchan wrote: “They keep asking me on the set of work; the reason for me to be working, and I have no answers for this, except it’s another job opportunity for me. What else could possibly be the reason?”
Bachchan said, “Others have their own assessment of occasions and conditions, and often like to exercise their model to be prime; wear my shoes and find out. Maybe you are right and maybe not; you have the liberty to have your conclusions, and I have the liberty of my work.”

What People Can Learn From Bachchan’s Life
These questions don’t ruffle him. He knows what he is doing. “My work was given to me; my reasons may not agree with you, but because the right to express has been given multiple tunnels of presence, you are heard, you said, I heard, I gave reason for working on…that is me; what reason I have is mine, enclosed, shuttered and locked,” he wrote in the blog posted on August 18.
At a time when some people think of retiring early, in their 40s and 50s, much before the official retirement age of 60, Bachchan’s humble demeanour, elegant style and zeal towards work have been an inspiration to people about what they can look forward to when they reach that age. The actor wants to remain productive and continues to accept offers in the prime of his golden years.

Is The Idea Of Ideal Retirement Age A Myth?
For many people, financial reasons may be a consideration for continuing to work in their golden years. However, some people like Bachchan may like to work to keep themselves productive despite financial security. For them, money becomes a by-product. So, reasons can vary. Experts say that having a purpose in life is very important, whether it is money, passion for work, an idea, social connection, or the desire to give something back to society.
As Bachchan says in the post: “The impotency of content compels you to build your own sand castles and enjoy its manufacturing; in time, sandcastles fall down; find a measure of permanency if it has been built for you and your business. Mine is done and it stands still – I work. Period. Got a problem with that? Well then get to work and find out.”
