The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has once again extended the deadline for free updation of Aadhaar card till December 14, 2024. The previous deadline ended on Saturday. In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, it wrote: “UIDAI extends free online document upload facility till 14th December 2024 to benefit millions of Aadhaar Number Holders. This free service is available only on the #myAadhaar portal.”
After its launch in 2009, the first Aadhaar card was issued in 2010. The unique 12-digit identification number in Aadhaar is mandatory for documenting know-your-customer (KYC) details necessary to availing various government schemes and benefits.

Hence, it is vital to keep the Aadhaar information updated. To give people more time to update their Aadhaar details, UIDAI has extended the last date to update it for free. UIDAI charges up to Rs 100 for an Aadhaar update, but it will be free if they do it by the last date. Note that the charge for biometric updation is Rs 100, and for updating details, such as name, date of birth, gender, address, mobile number, and email ID, either single or a combination of these details, is up to Rs 50. Also, one can update the details offline or on the UIDAI website.

According to the UIDAI site, one requires an Aadhaar card to avail of the benefits from more than 2,200 government social welfare schemes and over 270 services. Financial and telecom service entities are also required to secure Aadhaar details to provide their services to users, such as while opening a bank account, providing a new SIM card, etc.
It is also needed to file an income tax return (ITR). The Aadhaar-linked mobile number is used to send OTPs to authenticate various transactions. Furthermore, it is also needed to receive LPG subsidies, pension scheme benefits, and digital life certificate facilities, among others.
Aadhaar is used as a valid official document to verify personal information. Hence, it is critical to update the Aadhaar card details. It is linked with your bank, post office and demat accounts and is mandatory for investments, ID and address proof, etc. The Aadhaar card holder must update it whenever there is an address change, a minor becomes a major, a name change after marriage, or an accident requiring a person’s biometric updation. These updates from time to time will reduce the possibility of any misuse of your data.
