Filing income tax is mandatory for all individuals with taxable income. Salaried individuals can file their income tax return (ITR) by the July 30 deadline without penalty. Those who miss the deadline can do so by December 31, 2024, with a fine. Likewise, if they have paid more in taxes for a particular financial year, they will get a refund after a certain period after filing the taxes.

However, it is important to calculate the correct tax liability after deductions and exemptions. It is also crucial to link your Permanent Account Number (PAN) and Aadhaar before proceeding.

Those who have completed the process, including return verification, will receive a refund for any extra tax paid during a fiscal year. The refund status can be checked on the I-T Department’s official e-filing website.

Step1: Log into your e-filing portal

Step 3: After that, you can see the details of your refund status. Click ‘View information’ to see the history and the current status.

Step 4: If a refund has been provided, the data will be updated, including the mode of payment, return amount, and date of clearing.

Partial Refund

Sometimes, a tax refund may be partially adjusted to cover outstanding taxes. In that case, the total refund amount may be deducted from the total tax liability. If the refund claim is refused or not credited to the bank account, the date and cause of failure will be indicated. For example, suppose your PAN card is inactive because it is not connected to Aadhaar. In that case, the website will prompt you to finish the process after paying the punitive charge under section 234/H, which is Rs 1,000.

Refund Failure

Aside from this, there might be additional reasons why the refund failed. As per the income tax (I-T) rules, your refund may not be processed if your bank is not pre-validated. This is a necessary step everyone must complete if you haven’t done so previously. Similarly, a refund request may be denied if your name on the bank savings account does not match your PAN data. Also, if you provided an incorrect IFSC code for your bank account or closed the account selected for reimbursement, your refund will not be processed, leading to delays.
