PM Vishwakarma Yojana is a skill development and livelihood scheme for craft persons who require a platform to promote their unique handmade products. The government launched the program for five years until FY2027-28, and based on its impact, it could further extend this initiative. The individual must be 18 years or older to be eligible for the scheme.

Senior citizens can avail of this initiative as there is no maximum age limit. Under this initiative, the government organises various national and international events, like trade fairs, to promote their products, including facilitating exports. Additionally, the beneficiaries receive toolkits to boost productivity and refine their work. The scheme is available for rural and urban craft persons from the economically weaker sections across the country.

The programme is implemented jointly by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) and the Ministry of Finance’s (MoF) Department of Financial Services (DFS).

Objective Of The Scheme

The scheme’s primary objective is to empower the skilled crafts persons of the economically weaker sections of society, such as people belonging to the scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, other backward classes, specially-abled, trans-genders, residents of the northeastern states, the island territories and the hilly areas, and women.

Who Can Avail This Scheme?

The beneficiary must be at least 18 on the registration day; there is no maximum age limit. Only one member of a family can claim benefits under PM Vishwakarma Yojana. Government employees are barred from the programme. Additionally, the beneficiary must be a traditional craftsperson working with hands and tools, such as boat makers, doll makers, carpenters, toolkit makers, blacksmiths, goldsmiths, locksmiths, cobblers, potters, sculptors, etc.

PM Vishwakarma ID Card

The artisans and craftspeople will receive a PM Vishwakarma Certificate and a PM Vishwakarma ID Card containing a unique digital number. The certificate is given to recognise the person as a Vishwakarma beneficiary. The certificate and ID card are provided digitally and physically.

What Are The Benefits Of The Scheme?

The holder of PM Vishwakarma certificate and ID card is a proof of their skills. Based on these documents, the artisans will receive skill-upgradation classes from senior trainers from time to time. They will also receive toolkits to create superior quality handcrafted goods. A bank credit line, a collateral-free loan with interest concessions, is also provided to them for enterprise development, such as starting a small venture or upgrade their shops.

The artisans are given practical classroom trainings, with modern tools audio-visual gears. The master trainers are sourced from the industry and the community.

How Can Senior Crafts Persons Benefit?

MSDE administers tailor-made training programmes for skill-upgradation and modernisation needs of Vishwakarmas. According to MSDE, the initiative aims to strengthen the “guru-shishya parampara”,disseminate and enhance skills and increase beneficiaries.
