The Telangana government has set up a senior citizens’ arm under the Disabled Welfare Department, with its director as the state-level nodal officer to implement the national policy for older people. Also called the Department for Welfare of Disabled and Senior Citizens, it implements the rules related to senior citizens and differently-abled people, such as the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, the National Trust Act, 1999, and Maintenance & Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007.
The senior citizen card allows elderly people to avail of the state government’s welfare schemes, such as pensions, free transportation on public buses, food, medicine, health check-ups, etc., with ease.

The department implements welfare programmes for the elderly and differently-abled people in coordination with other departments to ensure an independent and dignified life in their old age. Additionally, the Telangana government has set up a 24/7 helpline number, the 14567 Elder Line, to cater to various services for senior citizens.
Some of its services include rescue and reunion with families, emotional support for the neglected, legal aid, support in availing benefits and entitlements under the MWPSC Act, and information on various senior citizen-friendly services and products.
