Did you know that the Vembanad Lake in India is the longest and largest lake nationwide? This beautiful body of water spans several cities in Kerala, each with its unique name. Since 1952, the Nehru Trophy Boat Race has been an annual event held in one section of the lake. Along the banks of the Vembanad Lake, you can find the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, home to many migratory birds. If you’re a senior traveller, you may enjoy birdwatching while taking in the serene backwaters of Kerala. For local lodgings and a chance to experience the lake like a native, consider checking out the Kumarakom Lake Resort, just a few kilometres from the sanctuary.

Dal Lake

A popular attraction among locals and visitors is the Dal Lake in Srinagar, also known as the “Srinagar’s Jewel” and “Lake of Flowers.” This lake was constructed during the reign of Mughal Emperor Jehangir and is surrounded by a boulevard featuring Mughal-era gardens like the Shalimar Bagh and Nishat Bagh, as well as parks, houseboats, and hotels. The Dal Lake offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped Himalayan ranges. It is an ideal spot for senior travellers to explore the gardens and rent a houseboat to enjoy the stunning scenery for hours.

Ashtamudi Lake

In the Kollam district of Kerala lies the magnificent Ashtamudi Lake, second only in grandeur to the vast Vembanad Lake. Its name is derived from the eight streams that branch out, resembling hair braids (“ashta” meaning eight and “mudi” meaning hair braids). The lake is home to diverse flora and fauna, adding to the scenic views of local boats and fishermen utilizing Chinese fishing nets. For senior travellers, there is a wonderful opportunity to explore the traditional architecture of The Raviz Resort, which also offers modern amenities and indoor activities. Additionally, several museums are nearby for those interested in learning about the local culture and history.

Umiam Lake

The Umiam Lake, a reservoir just 15 km from Shillong, Meghalaya, is situated in the hills and is an essential component of the area’s ecosystem. It provides downstream irrigation, fisheries, and drinking water to meet the needs of the local population. Tourists visit this place to enjoy kayaking, water cycling, scooting, and boating. Older travellers can stay at the nearby Ri Kynjai Resort, where they can test their golfing skills, admire the hills and the lake, engage in indoor activities, and explore the local culture in nearby villages.
