Indira J., 60, is passionate about preserving nature to the best of her ability. Residing in Nashik, Maharashtra, she enjoys tending to her garden more regularly as she gets more free time post-retirement. Throughout her college and professional life, she has always recognised the significance of World Environment Day. Even during her college years, she actively participated in tree plantation drives and environmental awareness campaigns. Reflecting on her passion, she says, “The environment holds immense importance for me because our existence depends on its well-being.”

Passion For Environmental Protection

It is her love for nature and greenery that inspires and drives her to grow plants and create a greener and cleaner environment. This led her to use natural fertilisers, compost kitchen waste, conserve water and electricity, repurpose kitchen wastewater for watering plants, install a solar heater system, soak lentils in sunlight, walk short distances, and install a solar system for electricity generation.

Though many people may know one or the other method of conserving a healthy environment, implementing them is where most fall short. However, Jain has consistently been mindful and has gradually changed her lifestyle to align with this goal.

Conscious Conservation Of Light And Water: She consciously tries to conserve light and water every day. She advises and encourages her maids also to do the same. She says, “They keep water flow from taps low while performing daily chores and diligently switch off lights and fans when unnecessary”.

Minimising Food Wastage: She tries to avoid waste by planning meals, buying only what is necessary, and creatively using leftovers. This approach reduces food waste, saves resources, and minimises the environmental impact of food production.

Embracing Simplicity: Her motto is simplicity. “I believe in leading a simple life. I can significantly reduce my carbon footprint and contribute to a healthier environment by minimising unnecessary material possessions and reducing consumption”.

Supporting Local Products: Going by her motto, she does not want fancy things, and thus, prioritises using local products. By doing so, she wants to support local businesses and communities and reduce the carbon emissions associated with transportation.

Environmental Organisations And Initiatives: While she has not actively participated in any environmental organisations or initiatives recently, she acknowledged their efforts and deeply appreciates them. “These organisations are vital in raising awareness, implementing sustainable practices, and advocating for environmental protection”, says she.
