102 Not Out: Tips To Living Longer

In the movie, Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan plays the role of Dattatraya Vakharia, a happy-go-lucky man at 102 years of age who wants to beat the world record for the oldest man alive by living 16 more years. Dattatraya’s son, Babulal (played by Rishi Kapoor), 75, is completely opposite of him. He lives a life of strict routine. The movie revolves around how Dattatraya teaches his son to live his life to the fullest and threatens to send him to an old-age home if he doesn’t abide by his principles. He tests Babulal from time to time. In the end, the father reveals that he wants to teach his son that life is too short to complain about little things and to enjoy life each day as it comes before he dies.

Here are some lessons learned from the movie:

Have a Purpose in life

Having a purpose in life can help you stay motivated and get out of bed positive every day. Dattatraya wants to teach his son how to live a happy life instead of living the same day for the rest of his life. Because of his advanced age, Dattatraya knew his final journey from Earth could happen anytime, and he wanted to show his son Babulal how one should live one’s life. On the other hand, if Dattatraya had been depressed, he might have left his son depressed after he passed away, and Babulal would have lived miserably for the rest of his life. So, Dattatraya found a purpose: to live longer, be happy, and teach his son the same.

Try New Things

In the movie, you can see Babulal lives by a routine and not like trying anything new. As a result, his life is dull and uninteresting. On the contrary, Dattatraya’s life is a roller coaster; he tries new things and finds happiness in learning something new. When Dattatraya removes Babulal from his comfort zone, he struggles a lot, but in the end, he feels like a completely new person filled with hope in life. His transformation shows that trying new things can be initially challenging emotionally, but they are crucial to breaking life’s monotony.

Don’t Take Too Much Stress

Amitabh Bachchan’s character is portrayed as colourful because he celebrates and enjoys the small things in life. In contrast, Rishi Kapoor’s character is portrayed as gloomy, as he always stresses over things, even the minute they go out of his control. He gets worried if his schedule is messed up and finds it difficult to step out of his comfort zone when tested by his father. Dattatraya’s life inspires you to let things go and live stress-free life.

Physical Fitness

Physical fitness is vital to living a healthy life. The movie shows that seniors should do routine checks and shouldn’t depend on medicine and professional help for minor problems like allergies and seasonal fever. Babulal sees the doctor, even for minor health issues. Dattatraya warns Babulal that his doctor is taking undue advantage of him by being overly cautious and paranoid about his health. Instead, he suggests that he stay fit and eat healthy food to avoid minor health problems.

Let Go Of Things That Do Not Give You Peace

In the end, Babulal’s son Amol (Dattaraya’s grandson) tries to contact his father to ask for money, so he leaves him and stays independent. At this point, Dattatraya alleges that Amol only contacts his father when he needs money. When Dattatraya challenges Babulal to cut off ties with Amol, he protests. Dattatraya also reminds him that Amol did not visit his mother when she had been suffering from dementia.

In conclusion, many things in life do us more harm than good, be it a relationship or material desire. When Dattatraya reveals that he has a brain tumour and makes a ruse of sending Babulal to an old age home, he tells him that he did so to rid his son of negativity in his life. His life story shows that one should consider letting go of things for the greater good of everyone involved.
