The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has sought applications from retired central government employees to fill four vacancies for consultants on a contract basis in the Directorate of Income Tax (legal & research). The candidates must send their applications to the Income Tax Department in the prescribed format by 6 pm on November 17, 2023.

According to a recent CBDT circular, central government employees who have retired with a pay grade of level 13, 12, 11 and 10 are eligible for the posts, which will be for a year and can be extended for another 12 months. They will be engaged in the legal research department of the Directorate of Income Tax to deal with matters related to litigation before the Supreme Court.

The applicants will be selected based on their “clean track record” and “substantive experience” in handling litigation and legal issues arising in implementing direct tax laws, the October 26, 2023, circular reads.

Interviews And Job Description 

Besides assisting the directorate, they will coordinate with the income tax field offices, Central Agency Section (CAS) and other agencies regarding vetting, briefing and seeking information on legal matters before the Supreme Court and other tasks to be assigned from time to time.

The names of the successful candidates will be posted on the department’s website for interviews following the screening process. The shortlisted candidates will be informed via email for the interview. Further, they must produce their original certificates for verification during the interview, and no transport or dearness allowance will be paid to attend the meeting.

The hired consultants will be entitled to avail of leaves pro rata as per the rules. The unclaimed leaves in a calendar year won’t be carried forward or entitled to encashment.

The work timings will be regular working office hours from Monday to Friday. However, they may be called for duty on weekly and gazette holidays if required.

The circular reads that their employment will automatically stand terminated at the end of the contract period unless extended by the directorate or on mutual consent of both parties.

Interested candidates can send their applications in the prescribed format attached in the circular to delhi.ito.\r.admin@incometax.gov by 6 pm on November 17, 2023.
