Employees’ State Insurance Corporation also known as ESIC added 18.86 lakh new subscribers, up 18.2 per cent month-on-month, in December 2023, its provisional data shows. The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) scheme provides injury, disability, death, medical and maternity benefits to the unorganized sector employees.
The data shows about 23,347 new establishments were registered with ESIC in December 2023. Of the ESIC-added 18.86 lakh new subscribers, 8.83 lakh, or 47 per cent of the total, were youth. New female subscribers comprised 3.59 lakh, and 47 transgender employees.
In November 2023, 15.92 lakh new employees and 20,830 new establishments joined ESIC. Of the total, 3.17 lakh were female employees, and 58 were trans-genders.
The data reflects a steady month-on-month growth of ESIC members.

What Is ESIC?
Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) provides insurance benefits to the employees of the unorganised sector. For instance, it provides injury, disability, death, medical and maternity benefits as well as wage loss due to absence from work, etc. Under the scheme, the employee contributes 0.75 per cent of their salary and 3.25 per cent by the employer towards ESI. The scheme also covers funeral and confinement cost, besides medical care for the family members.
The scheme is governed under the Employees’ State Insurance Act, 1948, by ESIC under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. The scheme applies to all establishments, including road transport, construction sites, shops, cinemas, hotels, restaurants, and educational and media institutions, employing 10 or more people with an employee salary of up to Rs 21,000 per month. For disabled employees, the wage limit is Rs 25,000.

ESIC has recently notified extending medical benefits to employees who were in a job for a minimum of five years after April 1, 2012, and who have retired or taken voluntary retirement on or after April 1, 2017, with up to Rs 30,000 monthly salary will receive the medical benefits.
