Gold investment is considered a safe investment tool in a volatile market. Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme are cost-effective as they offer tax benefits on capital gains at maturity. Although SGBs mature in eight years, premature withdrawals are allowed after the fifth year. If sold before maturity, the profits are taxable; after maturity, the proceeds are tax-free in the hands of investors. Investors can also sell the bonds within a fortnight of their purchase in the secondary market. The long-term gains are also subject to indexation benefits if the bonds are transferred to someone else.
